Claude Fleury, 'L'Histoire Ecclesiastique', an incomplete set with duplicates

  • Notes: Note: Claude Fleury was a church historian and teacher born in Paris in 1640. He was ordained some time before 1672, when Louis XIV appointed him tutor to his sons, the Princes Conti. During his career as Royal Tutor, he produced many religious texts and treatises, the most significant of which was the first encyclopedia of the history of the Christian Church. The first volume was published in 1691 and Fleury proceeded to complete 19 additional volumes. Upon his death in 1725, the work was continued by John Claude Fabre who issued another 16 volumes and two further volumes were produced subsequently
  • Condition: General marks, wear and rubbing commensurate with age and use. Some volumes lacking and duplicates of other volumes as stated. Apparently missing volumes 2, 5, 7 & 8, 17, 23, 28, 31 & 34. Variations to dates. With hand notations on some pages. Some volumes lacking pages. Some losses to leather bindings. All legible. A good series for display. Volumes No further condition information can be provided. We have described this and all lots to the best of our ability.
