  • Notes: The Nkisi Nkondi were used as figures of spiritual importance and protection. The word "Nkisi" loosely translates to "spirit," but more specifically refers to the medicine used by a healer, or "Nganga" in a community. The Nganga would commission a sculptor to carve the Nkondi figure out of wood, which was then imbued with the essence of the Nkisi spirit through use. Over time, the Nganga would adorn the figure allover with amulets and strips of knotted fabric, each one representing an oath, contract, treaty, or transaction made with the healer. Medicine was stored in cavities of the belly or "mooyo," often with mirrored fronts.

The Nkisi spirits were also employed as protectors of the community as agents of jurisprudence to hunt down witches, oath breakers, and societal wrongdoers. In order to activate the spirit, the Nganga would hammer nails into the Nkondi, calling on the Nkisi spirit inside to do their bidding.

During the late 19th century, many Nkondi figures were confiscated and destroyed by European missionaries. Many of the remaining examples of Nkisi Nkondis from that time have been found stripped of their adornments and the medicine stored within the mooyo cavities, effectively rendering them powerless and inert for spiritual or healing purposes. However, these examples seem mostly intact, with the previous contents of the medicine cavities unknown as they have since been sealed.
  • Condition: Each overall good condition and structurally sound with the appropriate patina, soiling, scratches, and rust to the nails, and brittleness to fabrics commensurate with age. The smaller figure lacking spear and with adhesive rubber feet applied to underside. The larger with one rubber foot applied to underside and mounting wire twisted around one of the nails.
