Saul Tepper

(1899-1987)

"The Minute Man"

Gouache, pastel, and pencil on paper laid to artist's board
Signed lower right: Tepper; titled and with text within the composition: "The Minute Man / is still the man of the hour / to preserve our precious heritage.../ each of us must always be ready / to act at a minute's notice."
Image/Sheet: 22.125" H x 17.75" W

  • Provenance:
The Collection of Gary Diamond, Los Angeles, CA
  • Condition: Overall generally good appearance. The colors are bright. Pale light-staining where the paper is exposed, generally around the figure, within the words "The Minute Man," and above the city skyline. A 1.5" H x 1.5" W area of damp staining in the upper left corner, another 1" H x 0.625" W area at the upper portion of the right edge, with a few small, scattered damp stains elsewhere. Two thin, diagonal surface scratches (or old, possibly repaired tears) along the lower left edge, to the left of the black city silhouette, one measuring 0.75" and the other 1.25". The white gouache along the sheet edges appears slightly unstable, with attendant specks of paint loss which have fallen against the black silhouette area. The corners are worn and dog eared with attendant small pigment losses. Minor scattered surface soiling, predominantly along the edges. The sheet is loose.

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
