''Young Moses'', standing male in an Egyptian costume, signed and dated lower right: Max Wieczorek, 19(c)21, signed and dated again and titled verso, oil pastel on board under glass, 61.75'' H x 39'' W, est: $500/800 Note: Ted Shawn (1891-1972), depicted here, was a modern dance pioneer based in Los Angeles in the teens and twenties. His wife and artistic partner was influential modern dancer Ruth St. Denis (1879-1968), likely the subject of lot 1066. St. Denis was a choreographer and, along with Shawn, featured dancer in D.W. Griffith’s 1916 epic Intolerance: Love’s Struggle through the Ages, performing the famous ''sacred dance in memory of the resurrection of Tammuz'' before the gates of Babylon. In 1915, St. Denis and Shawn formed the Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, the first dance academy in America to produce a professional dance company. Shawn and St. Denis incorporated themes of Egyptian, Indian and East Asian dance in their work which, coupled with elaborate orientalist costuming, made them popular fixtures in vaudeville and concert halls. .
