  • Notes: Note: According to the consignor's family, this painting was acquired directly from the artist on the day of the 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco. The family's Victorian home was on Broadway in the Pacific Heights neighborhood where Latimer had his studio. On the day of the earthquake, the present owner's great-grandmother, Caroline Lendelof-Johnson, came across the artist running down the street wearing only his shorts and clutching this painting, unframed, under his arm. Latimer purportedly exchanged the painting for a set of her husband's clothes and shortly after, the new owner had it framed in San Francisco. It has remained in her family to the present day and retains its carved leaf-motif frame. Copies of three pages from Lendelof-Johnson's diary titled 'Memoirs of Your Mother and Father from Life's Diary' about the family's ordeal after the earthquake are included with the lot along with a copy of a black and white photograph of the home on Broadway where the painting originally hung
