Image: 7" H x 5.5" W; Image including legend: 10" H x 5.5" W; Sheet: 11.375" H x 9.375" W

  • Literature:
    The Art Journal, no. 137, March 1896, p. 89
    Chicago 146 i/i; Levy 159; Way 110
  • Notes:
According to research spearheaded by Nesta Spink, together with editors Harriet Stratis and Martha Tedeschi for the Art Institute of Chicago's original two volume catalogue raisonne of the artist's lithographs, "The periodical edition was machine printed from supplementary stones by Thomas Way for "The Art Journal." The lithograph appeared in the March 1896 issue; it was titled "Evelyne" in the table of contents and in Joseph Pennell's descriptive note on page 89. Impressions for the periodical edition were printed on cream laid paper, which has often darkened to buff or tan. The recto of the paper has a smooth surface, while the verso bears a distinct pattern of laid and chain lines. These proofs are generally coarser and grainier than those pulled from the original stone, and many have been trimmed to remove the printed legend.
  • Condition: Overall generally good appearance. The sheet with wide margins, still including the printed "Art Journal" publication legend which, as described by Spink, is often trimmed away. The paper tone slightly faded within the mat's window opening. A 0.75" H x 0.5" W area comprised of several pinhead-sized holes with related, irregular, branching tears connecting the tiny holes, in the outer portion of the right margin, none of which affects the image. A 0.375" vertical tear at the center of the lower margin edge, not affecting the image. Annotated in pencil, in another hand, with the artist's name and title of the work, verso. The sheet is hinged to the back mat with linen hinges from the verso of the upper margin corners.

    Framed under glass:15.75" H x 12.75" W x 1" D
