James McNeill Whistler

(1834-1903)

"Hurlingham," 1879

Etching and drypoint on cream laid paper
From the combined total of 49 known impressions in all four states; fourth (final) state
With the artist's shaded-wing butterfly signature in the plate at lower left
Plate: 5.5" H x 8" W; Sheet: 8.75" H x 11.5" W

  • Literature:
    Glasgow 184 iv/iv; Kennedy 181
  • Condition: Overall good appearance. A rich impression with inky plate edges, and still with traces of burr on the drypoint in the small sail at far right as well as in some of the watery shadows in that same area. The full sheet with deckled edges on three sides and two old binding holes at the extreme right margin edge, attendant with the sheet as selected by the artist. A small, relatively unobtrusive foxmark in the sky near the right plate edge, and another, even paler, in the sky just above the tree line at center. Another foxmark in the lower margin, not affecting the plate, as well as occasional old printer's ink, and a manuscript "85" in the lower left margin corner, which, like the two binding holes already described, is likely attendant with the original sheet as selected by the artist. A short crease across the tip of the upper right margin corner. The sheet is hinged to the back mat from the verso of the upper margin corners.

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
