view of San Francisco harbor circa 1918 s l/l: J. Bond Francisco o/c laid/d on/c

22x26

  • Provenance: Exhibition: This is probably the painting exhibited at the California Liberty Fair, Los Angeles, 1918 (as "San Francisco"/catalogue #11)
  • Notes: J. Bond Francisco's historical view of San Francisco depicts the northeastern peninsula of the city, from a vantage point in the vicinity of Alcatraz Island. The most prominent landmark is the Ferry Building's clock tower seen left of center. The Ferry Building opened in 1898 and served as San Francisco's principal point of entry. Before the completion of the Bay Bridge in 1936 and the Golden Gate in 1937, 170 boats per day carried 100,000 passengers through the Ferry Building depot. Its volume of 50 million passengers per year was second in the world only to Charing Cross Station, London.
