  • Notes: Hans Jorgensen Wegner, born in 1914, developed a passion for wood and design when he was fourteen years old and working as an apprentice to a master carpenter and cabinetmaker. After studying at the School of Arts and Crafts and Academy of Architecture in Copenhagen, Wegner opened his first workshop in the 1930s and eventually became a prominent Danish and Scandinavian design figure. Focusing on traditional craftsmanship and his utmost respect and care for wood, Wegner is now known for his thoughtful attention to detail that combined functionality and comfort in a range of iconic designs. For example, during Wegner's prolific career, he is known to have designed over 500 chairs. This model, hand-built at Getama's factory in Denmark, is a classic Wegner design notable for its low-back structure and consistent joinery throughout.
