Created in 1970, "Pagosa Springs" is one from a series of seven lithographs related to the artist's "Copper Series" of paintings created between 1960 and 1961.

Printed and published by Gemini G.E.L., each of these lithographs both revisit and reinterpret these iconic paintings from an early period of Stella's career. Titled after mining towns found in the mountainous regions of Colorado, these prints are an homage to the region of the United States that was the nation's primary source of copper and silver at the turn of the twentieth century.

From a technical perspective, each print from this series is relatively complex: these lithographs were created using several screens through which metallic paints and tinted varnishes were applied in order to create the final image. As such, each print from the "Copper Series" is much more than simply a reproduction of Stella's iconic paintings. A full page in the Frank Stella catalogue raisonne of prints is dedicated to this particular print from the series, "Pagosa Springs."

Other impressions of this print are held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Buffalo AKG Art Gallery, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

Related artists include Josef Albers, Jo Baer, John Baldessari, Larry Bell, Lee Bontecou, Mary Corse, Tony Delap, Jim Dine, Dan Flavin, Helen Frankenthaler, Sam Gilliam, Carmen Herrera, David Hockney, Hans Hofmann, Jasper Johns, Donald Judd, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Mangold, Agnes Martin, Robert Motherwell, Louise Nevelson, Kenneth Noland, Beverly Pepper, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Ed Ruscha, Robert Ryman, Tony Smith, Anne Truit, Richard Tuttle, Tom Wesselmann, and Franz West.
