"The Vegetable Vendor: A Sheet of Studies," c.1738

Red chalk heightened with white on buff paper
Signed lower left: F. Boucher
Image/Sheet: 10.375" H x 14.25" W

  • Provenance: David Tunick, Inc., New York, NY
The Estate of Lady Leslie Ridley-Tree
  • Literature: A. Ananoff, "L'Oeuvre dessine de Boucher" vol. I (Paris, 1966), No. 537, illus. Fig. 99

Other notes: According to a label affixed to the frame's backboard, presumably prepared by David Tunick, Inc., this drawing is "A study for the important painting of 'The Vegetable Vendor' in the Chrysler Museum, Norfolk [VA], and related to the famous pastel of 'The Boy with a Carrot' in Chicago [Art Institute of Chicago], this drawing is an exciting rediscovery: It last appeared in 1925 in a sale in Paris, after which historians lost all trace of it. It had 'vanished' to a collector in South America until it was brought to New York this past year. It is here on public exhibition for the first time in 67 years."
  • Condition: Overall good condition. Scattered pale foxing. Slight remains of old glue along the verso of the sheet edges. The extreme tip of the lower left sheet corner has been skillfully replaced. Hinged to the back mat from the verso of the upper sheet corners.

    Framed under glass: 19.5" H x 23.5" W x 1.5" D

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
