Emmy Lou Packard

1914-1998, San Francisco, CA

"Diego Rivera on the pyramid he had built in Coyoacan," 1941

Silver gelatin print on Agfa paper
Edition of unknown size; signed, titled, dated and inscribed in pencil in the margin, directly below the image: photograph by Emmy Lou Packard
Image: 10.5" H x 10.5" W; Sheet: 13.875" H x 11" W

  • Notes: As a child, Packard lived in Mexico City and was encouraged in her art interests by Diego Rivera. Years later, when the man she had met while an undergraduate at University of California, Berkeley, and then married, was tragically killed in an auto accident, Packard returned to Mexico City, grateful to have Rivera and his wife, Frida Kahlo, as close friends. She spent a great deal of time with Rivera and Kahlo, often eating and sometimes traveling with them. She is also known to have photographed them in Mexico. In 1940, Packard assisted Diego Rivera with his mural for the San Francisco World's Fair.

  • Condition: Generally good condition. The sheet retains wide upper and lower margins as well as narrower, 0.25" vertical margins. An approximately 0.5" arched handling crease in the image at lower left, visible mostly in a raking light; another handling crease of a similar size, but softer, in the image at lower right. The two features just described roughly correlate with two very small areas of extremely minor surface skinning, verso. The sheet is loose, not mounted.
