An 18th/19th Century Chinese ancestor portrait of a lady

Pigment and gold on fabric mounted to paper
Inscribed in characters with red ink, verso
Sheet: 67" H x 47" W

  • Condition: The colors rich. There is a 9" W (irreg.) band of damp staining extending along the entire right edge of the work, with occasional, attendant, unobtrusive spots of faint mold or mildew. Although this damp staining affects the right edge of the colorful carpet in the lower section of the work, it does not appear to affect the seated figure or her robes. A 2" H vertical tear near the center of the upper edge. A 0.75" H x 0.75" W (irreg.) loss in the upper portion of the left edge. A number of scattered surface scratches on the wooden platform. Occasional hairline surface scratches in the blue robe, the largest is about 5" H, on the right. A small hole in the background toward the center of the left side that measures about 0.125" H x 0.375" W, with two other smaller holes above. A few very slight horizontal rolling creases. Occasional flyspecks, surface dirt, and other minor defects.

    Unframed (a rolled scroll)

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
