A 19th century ancestor portrait of a lady

Pigment and gold on paper, edged with fabric and mounted to wooden dowels
Inscribed faintly in black ink, in Chinese, presumably by another hand, at the top of the scroll, verso; stamped in black ink bottom right, verso: "CHINA"
Sheet: 62.50" H x 38.75" W; Overall: 84.5" H x 43.5" W x 2.5" (Dia. of dowel)

  • Notes:
Roughly translated, the Chinese inscription (presumably added by a dealer or owner) reads, "Image of a great lady in a red robe."
  • Condition: There is a 6.5" W damp stain along the left edge extending about 4 inches into the background of the work, with an attendant 11" H x 24" W horizontal area of discoloration/staining, mostly confined to the background. This damp stain is repeated (due to being rolled) down the right side of the scroll to about the center, with accompanying spots of mold or mildew spaced about 6" H apart. These spots vary in size from roughly pea-sized to about 1.25" H x 1.25" W. There are occasional heavy areas of grime in the fabric border, especially in places along the right side. There is a large horizontal rolling crease toward the bottom of the figure, but the pigment is only lightly cracked. There is a brown, pea-sized stain in the upper right quadrant. While most of the pigment is intact, there is an area measuring 0.5" H x 3.5" W to the left of the tiger's foot that appears to be scuffed/worn away. Scattered fly specks. Linen and scotch tape visible in places, verso, and other minor defects.

    Unframed (a rolled scroll)

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
