Figural torchère

Patinated bronze, glass
Barbedienne Foundry
Signed in the casting: Falguière; further marked: F. BARBEDIENNE Fondeur
66.5" H x 15" W x 11" D approximately

  • Literature: This figure is one of the pair of torcheres that Barbedienne illustrates on page 63 of his 1886 catalogue "Bronzes D' Art". He lists them under the heading "Deux Femmes Debout" listed as "Porte-Lumières, style Renaissance" also indicating that they were modelled by Paul Dubois and Falguière.
  • Notes: An example of this model was exhibited by Barbedienne at the 1867 Exposition Universelle and subsequently installed at the Château de Compiègne as part of the refurbishment undertaken by Napoléon III and Empress Eugénie.
  • Condition: Overall good condition with scuffs and darkening/oxidation to bronze commensurate with age. Oxidation and verdigris throughout, with surface abrasions, scuffing, and rubbing to localized areas, particularly the raised elbow. Scattered soiling throughout. Fraying to the cord, needs to be rewired. Lighting fixture is loose. Wiring should be checked by a qualified electrician prior to use. Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
