After Roy Lichtenstein

(1923-1997)

"Whaam"

Reproduction of two offset lithographs in colors on paper
From an edition of unknown size and date, presumably after 1988
Unsigned; with the artist, artwork, and Tate Gallery, London information reproduced along the lower sheet edge
Image: 16" H x 38" W; Sheet: 17" H x 39" W

  • Literature:
    see Corlett Appendix 7
  • Notes:
Lichtenstein created his famous, largescale, "Whaam" diptych in 1963. Painted in acrylic and oil on two joined panels, this 68" H x 160" W work was purchased by The Tate Gallery, London, in 1966. During subsequent years, the museum authorized the publication of various large editions of color offset lithographs based on "Whaam," each example of which was printed on two separate large (each roughly 25" H x 29" W) sheets of paper to echo the format of the painting itself. The present lot, showing both portions of the diptych together on a single, smaller sheet of paper, appears to be a poster reproduction based on a pair of the previously published offset lithographs.
  • Condition: Overall good appearance. With margins. The left and right margin edges slightly curled due to being stored rolled. The sheet is loose, not matted.

    Unframed

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
