After Pierre-Etienne-Daniel Campagne, patinated bronze figure of a nude 'Phyrne'

24'' H x 14'' W x 7.5'' D

  • Literature: Literature: This model is illustrated in H. Berman, ''Bronzes: Sculptors & Founders 1800-1930'', Atglen, 1994, vol. IV, p.1075, fig. 4285
  • Notes: Note: Phryne was an ancient Greek courtesan, famous for her beauty. She is believed to have modeled for numerous artists during her lifetime. She was once called before a court on the grounds of profaning the Eleusinian mysteries. When it seemed Phryne was losing her case, she tore open her robes to display her naked body. The judges were either so hypnotized by the perfection of her form, or persuaded by the idea that physical beauty was a facet of divinity, that she was exonerated
  • Condition: Nicely cast, chased and patinated. With a medium to light brown patina to surface with light high points. General light marks and scratches to surface commensurate with age. Most notable scratches at bottom edges of base. Some dirt accumulation overall. AS-IS. ALL SALES FINAL
