Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli (1824-1886 French)

oil on panel
17'' H x 11.25'' W

  • Provenance: Provenance: Collection of Baron Pierre de Crawhez (see verso label); Property from a Private Collection, Ventura, CA
  • Notes: Note: A copy of an authentication letter from Monticelli scholar Professor Aaron Sheon of University of Pittsburgh, dated 21 August 1994, accompanies the lot. Professor Sheon writes: IÖbelieve it is a genuine work done during the last year of his life, 1885-1886, following his stroke and during the period he continued to paint although his hands were unsteady. These late expressionistic works have often been coveted by later artists because they seem so freely and quickly painted, not unlike the method of DeKooning and Soutine...I could barely find the signature, and that is a good thing, because most spurious Monticellis have a bold signature on them, as if to assure their authenticity. At this late period Monticelli did not always sign his works or left the signature barely visible
