A Sicilian polychrome painted, carved wood and wrought iron donkey cart

4'6'' H x 6'1'' W x 10'5'' D

  • Notes: Note: Used for festive occasions and pageants as well as for work, the highly decorated carretto Sicilia (Sicilian cart) has been a fixture of the decorative arts tradition in Sicily for hundreds of years, particularly in the provinces of Catania, Agrigento and Palermo. The shape of the carts and style of decorations vary regionally. Catanian makers have traditionally favored red as a base color, while makers in Palermo and Agrigento favor yellow. Neighbors compete against each other to create elaborate historical, literary and religious scenes on these ''walking picture books'', playing out an entire story from panel to panel around the sides and rear. Popular themes include the stories of Saint Agatha (patron saint of Catania), Verdi's ''Otello'', Bradamante (one of the greatest female knights in literature) and the story of Roland. A carved cart may take as long as five years to complete. Hailing from the town of Aci Sant'Antonio in the Catania province of Sicily, the Puglisi family are a long line of renowned makers of carts, and a descendent of the Puglisi family is curator of a cart museum connected to his home in San Gregario.
