  • Notes: Note: Catherine Murat Tayloe Simes was born in 1874 to Confederate General George Edward Tayloe and Delia Smith Willis of Virginia. Her forefathers were Colonel John Tayloe II & III, builders of Mt. Airy in Virginia and the Octagon house in Washington, D.C. The Willis family can be traced back to George Washington's Grandfather and Napoleon Bonaparte's Sister, Caroline of France. Catherine married Judge Thomas Hardy Simes of Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1905. The piece offered here was inherited from Catherineís mother-in-law, Mary Jane Turner Simes, and has been passed down through the family. Mary Jane, born 1844, from London and Liverpool, England, was married in 1864 to Captain Nathan Parker Simes, master of the ship ''Emily Farnum'' of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and the British ship ''Black Wall''
