Maurice Logan (1886-1977 Orinda, CA)

oil on canvas laid to artist's board
22.5'' H x 17.5'' W

  • Provenance: Private Collection, Westpoint, CA
  • Notes: Logan was first commissioned to produce posters for the Southern Pacific in 1922 and continued to work for the railroad for a decade. The present work depicts two Overland Route trains passing in opposite directions at the edge of the lake. Logan's typical Fauvist palette and bold brushwork are evident here, and the artist's use of a high vantage point and strong diagonal railroad track enhance the viewer's sense of distance and the expansive landscape of the Salt Lake region. The painting relates closely to another composition of two passing trains, painted by Logan at ground level, that the Railroad used as a 1927 poster
  • Condition: Visual: Generally good condition. Blacklight: A tiny spot of touch-up in the upper center sky and a .25'' spot of touch-up along the upper right edge.
