In 1969, Ed Ruscha was invited to create a series of prints with the Los Angeles-based Tamarind Lithography Workshop. Established in 1960 by the artist June Wayne, the workshop was established with the intention of bringing greater attention to the possibilities of lithography as a printmaking medium with funding from the Ford Foundation.

"Boiling Blood," a lithograph in colors on paper, was created in a small edition of only twenty impressions; this particular image is an artist's proof aside from the regular edition. Dating to an early period in the artist's career, "Boiling Blood" is a notable example of Ruscha's early experimentation with the lithography medium.

Other impressions from this edition can be found in the collections of the Norton Simon Museum, The Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Related artists include John Anthony Baldessari, Robert Barry, Larry Bell, Billy Al Bengston, Mel Bochner, Robert Cottingham, Jim Dine, Charles Gaines, David Hockney, Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Alex Katz, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Moses, Bruce Nauman, Claes Oldenburg, Richard Pettibone, Larry Rivers, Kay Rosen, James Rosenquist, Kenny Scharf, Frank Stella, Wayne Thiebaud, Lawrence Weiner, and Tom Wesselmann.
  • Condition: Overall good condition. Full margins with deckled edges. A very pale and unobtrusive 1" H x 0.25" W stain near the upper right margin corner, not affecting the image. The sheet is loose, hinged to the back mat at the verso of the upper margin corners with what appears to be archival paper tape.

    Framed under glass: 13.25" H x 15" W x 1" D

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
