Henry Chapman Ford (1828-1894 Santa Barbara, CA)

oil on canvas
10'' H x 24'' W

  • Provenance: Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery, Santa Barbara, CA; The Estate of Ernest A. Bryant III, Santa Barbara, CA, acquired from the above
  • Exhibited: Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, CA, ''A Painter's Paradise: Artists and the California Landscape'', November 1996 - February 1997; The Valley Club of Montecito, Santa Barbara, CA, ''Art Exhibition of California Plein Air Paintings 1878 - 1950'', November 2001 - January 2002; Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery, Santa Barbara, CA, ''California Missions'', August - September 2006
  • Notes: The present work is an exceptional example from Henry Chapman Ford?s unprecedented and historically important portfolio of oilpaintings, watercolors, and etchings of the Missions of California that the artist executed in the late 19th Century. The sweepingly impressive and detailed vista of the City of Santa Barbara features the Queen of the Missions at the center of the composition. Ford painted the historically accurate scene in realistic tones with fine, precise brushwork, but still includes a moment of whimsy -- along the lower center edge Ford paints a charming California ground squirrel on his haunches positioned as if he is surveying the majestic view before him
  • Condition: Visual: Generally good condition. A speck of loss along the upper center edge. Blacklight: No evidence of restoration under blacklight.
