Beginning in 1957, Adolph Gottlieb began creating a series of work that later became known as his "Burst" series. Each of these works show two spheres: one of which is relatively uniform in shape, hovering above another that appears to have burst suddenly - and violently - apart.

The Abstract Expressionist movement emerged in New York City in the immediate aftermath of World War II. Gottlieb, like all of his contemporaries, shared a collective fear of nuclear annihilation in the years that followed the use of nuclear weapons against Japan in 1945.

While some art historians have described the two spheres found in Gottlieb's "Burst" series as representing the sun, which remains uniform in shape as a nuclear weapon explodes beneath it, alternate interpretations for this imagery have also been put forth. One alternate interpretation of this imagery is closely tied to the ideas of the philosopher Carl Gustav Jung, which suggests that the hovering sphere represents the dominance of reason above the more mercurial element of the human mind: the unconscious. Both readings remain possible, as Gottelieb - along with the artist Mark Rothko - wrote in a 1943 letter published in the New York Times that they "favour[ed] the simple expression of the complex thought."

Other impressions of this print are held in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
