This lot includes a card from Robert Longo thanking Oscar & Barbara Leidenfrost for lending the work to a traveling exhibition, c. 1990. A large yellow shipping envelope from the Los Angeles County Museum, addressed to Barbara Leidenfrost, contains assorted materials from the museum, including black and white photographs of this lot, slides, and a letter stating that "enclosed are black-and-white photographs of the piece prior to treatment at the Wadsworth Atheneum and slides following treatment. The slides indicate the damage has been virtually removed," signed by the registrar, Renee S. Montgomery, and dated June 27, 1990.

In 1978, Robert Longo created a series of works known as "Boys Slow Dance." These three-dimensional sculptures were inspired by a scene from the 1953 noir film "Pickup on South Street." "Swing," one of the works from this series, is a cast aluminum wall relief in which two men dressed in suits are shown scuffling with one another.

One author, writing on this series of works, asked: are these images of two men "locked in... deadly combat? [or an] amorous embrace?" Longo's sculpture is decidedly post-modern for its lack of fixed meaning, even when we know the referential source of this work.
  • Condition: Overall good condition with minor surface scratches, scuffs, nicks, and dust accumulation commensurate with age. A pinhead-sized chip at the tip of the upper left corner. Dime-sized or smaller areas of glue residue, verso. With metal hinging, verso, presumably as issued.

Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
