Los Angeles, CA— On Tuesday, November 14th, 2023, John Moran Auctioneers presented their Fall California & American Fine Art auction. The 166-lot selection featured fresh-to-market artworks from both private and public collections throughout California and the Southwest. Leading the sale were works by early American artists, Edgar Alwin Payne, Benjamin Chambers Brown, Paul De Longpre, William Ritschel, and Frederick Waugh. With a wide range of subjects and time periods represented, this sale had something for every California and American collection.

Leading the sale was lot 58, Edgar Alwin Payne’s “The Water Front, Sottomarina, Italy.” Payne loved to travel, and this work captures the sparkling waters of Italy. With an estimate of $30,000-50,000, this oil painting sold for $44,450*.

There were multiple works by Benjamin Chambers Brown. Lot 27, “Eucalyptus Road,” had a modest estimate of $8,000-12,000 but after an engaging bidding war, the work left the block for a whopping $27,940*. Another Brown work that performed exceptionally well was lot 28, “Flower Orchard Along A Path”. Starting with a $2,000-4,000, the lovely spring-like setting sold for an $10,160*.

“Still Life Of Flowers In A Basket”, 1897, by Paul De Longpre was lot 162. This detailed watercolor work garnered an impressive winning bid of $21,590* after starting with an initial estimate of $4,000-6,000.

Another artist with multiple works in the sale was William Ritschel. Lot 17, “A Stiff North Wester” achieved an exciting result. Estimated $6,000-8,000, this work brought in a whopping $20,320*.

Lot 120 was a Frederick Waugh work, “Surf & Spindrift”. With an estimate of $7,000-9,000, this ocean work sold for $12,700*.
