Los Angeles, CA— Moran’s will be presenting their last Traditional Collector sale of the year on Tuesday, October 24th, 2023, starting at 10:00am PDT. This auction will have over 230 lots and is filled with fine art by William Matthew Prior, Jan Sluijters, Jacques Deveau, the 19th Century American School, and more. For furniture, there will be multiple lots of Louis XV and XVI-style pieces, an impressive selection of Chinese furniture, and a Tiffany & Co Grandfather clock—all of which would look great on any of the area rugs, estimates ranging $4,000-400. Highlights in decorative art include a Japanese Shibayama vase and a set of Chinese wallpaper panels. Christofle “Talisman” flatware and a set of Lalique “Algues” black glass plates, estimated $1,000-1,500, are just some of the offerings in tableware.

A Theodore Millet Empire-style chandelier $8,000-12,000

Leading the fine art category is, “Portrait of Marion L. Wardwell (1851-1943) at age 2,” 1853, by William Matthew Prior, estimated $10,000-15,000. Prior (1806-1873) was an American folk artist known for his portraits, particularly of families and children. About 1,500 portraits are attributed to Prior and can be found in many museums and institutions around the United States including Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the National Gallery of Art.

Other standout artists include Jacques Deveau and the 19th Century American School. Woman in red dress reading at the beach, by the French Postwar and Contemporary painter, Jacques Deveau (b. 1937) will be offered with a $2,000-3,000 estimate. The 19th Century American School oil painting, Portrait of young girl with flowers is estimated $2,000-3,000.

Collectors are sure to notice the stunning selection of lighting, such as the Theodore Millet Empire-style chandelier, estimated $8,000-12,000. The twelve-light sand cast gilt-bronze chandelier has twelve arms in scrolled acanthus and spiral form, each mounted with faux candles and radiating from an enameled vase-form centerpiece with grape finial and drop finial. There will also be a pair of French figural four light candelabras and a French gasolier converted to electricity, each estimated $4,000-6,000.

A monumental Chinese Export cloisonné ram $4,000-6,000

If planning extravagant holiday table settings, this sale has all the essentials. An array of porcelain, glassware, bowls, and champagne buckets will be available, along with a variety of silver flatware. A favorite is sure to be the Christofle “Talisman” silver-plated flatware service. The silver-plate and sienna brown enamel set is comprised of 69 pieces and will make its way to the block with a $4,000-6,000 estimate.

Among the selection of furniture is a late 19th century Tiffany & Co Walter Durfee grandfather clock, estimated $3,000-5,000. The nine-tube, three-movement tall case clock is designed with Arabic numerals on gilt and silvered metal dial and moon phase dial. It’s surmounted by a broken swan neck pediment and three gilt metal finials, housed in a bonnet with two twisted columnar features to the front. Set on a conformingly designed case with beveled glass window, it’s raised on four paw feet. Other furniture includes Louis XV and Louis XVI-style pieces, rugs, lamps, mirrors, plantstands, and a collection of Chinese cinnabar furniture consisting of a curio cabinet, table, stand, and a low chest of drawers.

There will be some beautiful Asian decorative items featuring urns, storage boxes, lanterns, trunks, plaques, panels, and a nice variety of vases. One of the top lots is a Japanese shibayama and silver vase from the Meiji period (1868-1912), estimated $3,000-5,000. For wall art, a 4-piece set of 18th/19th century Chinese export wallpaper panels, valued at $2,000-4,000. Made in China for the Middle Eastern market is a monumental Chinese Export cloisonné ram, estimated $4,000-6,000.

Adding to the fine art, this sale will also present works by Pietra Dura, George Romney, Ary Scheffer, Charles Joseph Natoire, Jules Cheret, Benjamin Williams Leader, Alvah Bradish, Kathe Kollwitz, and James Renwick Brevoort.
