Moran’s Traditional Collector auction features rare and wonderful finds from around the world

MONROVIA, CA – Moran’s December 15th Traditional Collector auction is sure to be a charming event with music boxes, fine art, and furnishings filling the sale. Many of the lots come from three important Southern California collections, making December’s auction a must-attend event for collectors and holiday shoppers alike.
Lot 209, Robert Dodd (1748-1815 British) “Battle of Malacca Straits, Feb. 15th, 1804, oil on canvas laid to waxed canvas, est.: $20,000-30,000
Moran’s is pleased to bring to market several excellent music boxes all consigned from the important Southern California collection of Ralph and Gloria Schack. An M. Welte & Sohn style 3 “Cottage” orchestrion has an impressive sound, evoking the feel of an orchestra. Housed in a wood case with glass viewing window, the orchestrion was expertly restored and heads to the block with a $200,000-300,000 estimate. A sweet music box featuring a singing bird by famed maker Charles Bruguier of delicate enamel and vermeil comes to the block with a $10,000-15,000 estimate. A gorgeous Regina Corona Style 34 has a beautiful sound and should easily sell within its $8,000-12,000 estimate.
Fine furnishings from a seasoned collector made their way into the December sale. An impressive gilt-bronze and champlevé clock and garniture set is one of the most arresting sets Moran’s has had the privilege to handle in recent years. Designed to look like a fine carpet has been draped over the bases, the clock and garniture set is expected to bring between $50,000-70,000 at auction. A gorgeous gilt-bronze red marble urn with beautiful details heads to the block with an $8,000-10,000 estimate. A playful gilt-bronze and alabaster sculpture of a dancing woman by sculpture Affortunato Gory is sure to sell within its $4,000-6,000 estimate.
Important works of ships and seascapes come to the auction from the outstanding Kelton Foundation collection. A dramatic painting of “The General Goddard East Indianman with the Dutch Fleet,” painted in 1800 by British artist Thomas Luny is a masterwork from the artist. It comes to the block with an $80,000-120,000 estimate. The historic Battle of Malacca straits is the subject of British artist Robert Dodd’s work coming to the block with a $20,000-30,000 estimate. American Antonio Jacobsen heads to the block with a beautifully rendered ship portrait of the Kroonland steamship, sure to sell within its $7,000-9,000 estimate.
Moran’s will end the year with their highly anticipated Fine Jewelry & Timepieces and Studio Jewelry auction on December 10th preceded by a selection of Luxury, Couture & Accessories.
