  • Provenance:
The Collection of Gary Diamond, Los Angeles, CA
  • Notes:
The silent Western movie, "The Lightening Rider," debuted in American theaters on May 18, 1924. According to IMDB, the plot involves a bandit known as The Black Mask who is terrorizing the countryside around the California border town of Caliboro. When word spreads that The Black Mask's gang will hit town, the town priest turns over the church's money to the local sheriff for safekeeping. The gang attacks the town and tries to take the money, but Deputy Phil Morgan stops it. Unfortunately, the sheriff is killed in the process. Morgan disguises himself as The Black Mask in order to find the gang's hideout but is captured by the local townspeople who think he is the real Black Mask. Complications ensue.
  • Condition: Overall generally good appearance. With wide (possibly full) margins that appear to have been skillfully repaired and overpainted with off-white pigment in places. Three generally unobtrusive horizontal and one unobtrusive vertical flattened creases through the image, all of which are likely attendant with the original storage, mailing, and/or transport of the sheet to the movie houses. There is a skillfully repaired tear originating from the upper portion of the central vertical crease and extending 8.5" horizontally through the man's left cheek and out into the blue background. There are a few other, shorter, also skillfully repaired "forked" vertical/diagonal tears originating from the lower portion of the same central vertical crease, to slightly affect the center of the various small text lines below the movie's title. The sheet is backed with canvas, as mentioned, and is framed floating, hinged to the back mat in places from the verso of the margin edges. Not examined out of the frame.

    Framed under glass: 43" H x 29" W x 2" D
