  • Notes: Note: Little is known about the itinerant painter Thomas Nash, but this extraordinary portfolio of oil paintings, retaining its original artist's binding, yields great insights into Nash's travels throughout the United States in the late 1870s and 1880s. The artist's notations made in the painted margins also provide information about his painting methods. The portfolio appears to have been used by the artist as a presentation tool to display his ability to paint a variety of landscape and coastal views in all seasons. Nash utilized the painted margins to show trompe l'oeil techniques and to paint accurate flora that relate to the central landscapes
  • Condition: Visual: Bound in an artist-made portfolio with 7 brad closures through the canvases. Each with general handling creases and folds and some subsequent minor paint loss. The front canvas with the most handling creases, folds and losses, also with a 5 in. tear in the upper left and two 1 in. tears in the lower left corner. The edges torn and worn. The back canvas additionally with water stains and holes. Blacklight: Each with no evidence of restoration under blacklight.
