37.25" H x 24.5" W

  • Provenance:
Sold: Bonhams, San Francisco, CA, "Dogs in Art," January 25, 2005, Lot 111
  • Notes:
Brussels-born artist and art restorer Thierry Poncelet is celebrated for his anthropomorphic depictions of dogs using repurposed 19th Century and Old Master portrait paintings. Poncelet studied art at the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels and, after graduation, joined the workshop of Max Massot where he continued his training in painting and restoration.

Poncelet found success as a restorer and painter, and also worked as an art dealer in Brussels. He personally collected ancestor portraits and was an enthusiastic dog lover. Inspired by his own dog and these combined interests, Poncelet began replacing human heads in older portraiture with the heads of various breeds of dogs, and called these collaborations "Aristochiens."

The humor and appeal of Poncelet's "Aristochien" portraits stem from the artist's ability to astutely match dog breed personalities with historical portrait settings. In the present painting, a Dalmatian stands stiffly, dressed in a formal men's suit, his gaze unwaveringly toward the viewer. In the pose and dress, Poncelet captures the breed's known intelligence, reserve, and dignity.

This lot is sold together with a copy of a book about the artist and his dog portraits: Bruce McCall, "Sit!: Ancestral Dog Portraits" (New York: Workman Publishing Company, Inc., 2001)
  • Condition: Visual: Overall good condition. Fine craquelure and crazing to the varnish layer, all scattered throughout. Occasional flecks of pigment loss scattered in the white shirt collar and in the background of the lower right quadrant. Minor frame abrasion scattered along the extreme left edge. As mentioned, the canvas is laid to Masonite.

Blacklight: Certain pigments in the background and the figure's jacket fluoresce under blacklight, presumably in the hand of the artist.

    Frame: 47.25" H x 34.75" W x 5.75" D
