  • Provenance: Property from the Estate of Mary and Al Scott

Mary (Wagner) and Al Scott met on Christmas Eve in 1945 at the iconic Smoke Tree Ranch in Palm Springs, California, where they were instantly drawn to each other. With their families present, alongside even Walt Disney, it was a night full of magic, and after just four weeks of dating, they eloped in Yuma, Arizona on February 11, 1946. Their love story spanned 47 years, filled with deep affection, playful nicknames, Momo and Rou, and a rich family life raising five children in Claremont, California. Many pieces in this jewelry collection were from her love Al as well as many pieces from her brother, Actor Robert Wagner which are engraved with heartfelt inscriptions marking anniversaries, holidays, and milestones.

William Ruser, born in 1908 in Philadelphia, began his jewelry career at age 17 with Trabert & Hoeffer-Mauboussin and later moved to Beverly Hills in the 1930s. After serving in the Army Air Corps during WWII, he and his wife Pauline opened Ruser Jewels on Rodeo Drive in 1947. The firm became known for its elegant platinum and diamond creations as well as whimsical, imaginative designs crafted from baroque freshwater pearls he had bought pre-war. These pearls, once out of fashion, were transformed into playful figures like cherubs, animals, and nursery rhyme children, blending charm with fine craftsmanship. Hollywood stars such as Joan Crawford, Loretta Young, and Barbara Stanwyck adored his work, which also appeared in several films. Ruser's whimsical style extended to accessories like cufflinks and compacts, and his Rodeo Drive location became a hub for celebrity clientele. His business thrived for two decades, employing up to 40 people at its peak, and left a legacy of creativity and charm in mid-century American jewelry design.
