  • Notes:
Robert Cottingham is an American artist celebrated for his paintings and prints depicting urban landscapes, including neon signs, storefronts, and movie marquees. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958, he earned a BFA from Pratt Institute, New York, NY, in 1963 and began a career in advertising. This professional background heavily influenced his art, particularly his focus on typography, lettering, and the intersection of art and commerce.

Though frequently associated with Photorealism, Cottingham identifies more closely with the realist tradition of American painters such as Stuart Davis, Charles Demuth, and Edward Hopper. His approach combines photography as a reference with creative reinterpretation, often cropping and enlarging words to alter their meaning or emphasize their emotional impact. Drawing inspiration from Pop Art and Andy Warhol's exploration of commercial imagery, Cottingham transforms urban signage into cultural commentary.

Cottingham's artistic journey took a pivotal turn when he moved to Los Angeles in 1968, committing fully to painting and drawing inspiration from the city's vibrant yet decaying commercial landscape. His work has been showcased in numerous prestigious exhibitions and galleries, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY, and the National Museum of American Art, Washinton, D.C., where he held a solo exhibition in 1998-99, and international venues such as the Centre National d'Art Contemporain in Paris and the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin. His ability to reinterpret everyday visuals has established him as a key figure in contemporary American realism.
