  • Provenance: Other notes:
Richard Marquis (b. 1945) was an American studio glass artist known for combining traditional Venetian techniques with a distinctly irreverent, contemporary sensibility. Born in Pueblo, Colorado, he earned his BFA from the University of California, Berkeley, and later studied at the University of Wisconsin–Madison under pioneering glass artist Harvey Littleton (1922-2013). Marquis was among the first generation of American artists to train in Murano, Italy, working at the famed Venini factory and absorbing centuries-old cane and murrine techniques that would become central to his practice.

Throughout his career, Marquis became closely associated with the American Studio Glass movement, bringing technical virtuosity together with wit and visual complexity. His work is held in major museum collections, including The Corning Museum of Glass, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. While deeply grounded in historical glassmaking traditions, Marquis rejected formal austerity in favor of bold color, layered pattern, and playful form, often incorporating humor and cultural references into his objects.

Marquis's 'Crazy Quilt' teapots are among his most celebrated forms. These works reinterpret the traditional teapot through a patchwork of intricate canework, assembling multicolored glass rods in dense, quilt-like compositions. The series demonstrates his mastery of Venetian techniques while asserting a distinctly American aesthetic that are energetic, improvisational, and unapologetically decorative. By elevating a domestic vessel into a tour de force of technical skill and visual exuberance, the 'Crazy Quilt' teapots occupy an important place in late 20th-century studio glass, bridging historical craftsmanship and postmodern expression.
