Reginald Marsh

1938-1942

"Merry-Go-Round," 1940

Engraving with hand-coloring in watercolor on cream laid paper
A third (final) state impression apart from, and presumably prior to, the 1969 posthumous edition of 100 published by the Whitney Museum of American Art
Signed in pencil in the lower margin, at right: Reginald Marsh; possibly a lifetime impression, possibly with hand-coloring by the artist
Plate: 8" H x 12" W; Sheet: 10.375" H x 13.75" W

  • Literature: Sasowsky 210, iii/iii

Other notes: Sasowsky records only one lifetime impression printed prior to the steel-facing of this plate for the Whitney Museum's posthumous edition of this image. That one example is in the collection of the New York Public Library. The NYPL's impression is not hand-colored. It is signed in pencil on the verso rather than in the lower margin of the recto, and is on thin wove rather than thin laid paper (the laid lines are hardly discernable), however, the plate and sheet sizes are essentially identical to ours. It is possible that the present lot is another rare, but previously unrecorded, lifetime impression.
  • Condition: Overall good condition. A rich impression on paper with wide margins. Pale mat staining in the margins and on the verso, concentrated primarily along the mat's window opening. A fleck of printer's ink in the merry-go-round pole of the man to the left of the central female. Taped to the overmat with brown paper tape at the verso of the upper margin corners.

    Framed under glass: 16" H x 20" W x 2" D

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
