Patrick Hughes

(b. 1939)

"The Domestic Life of the Rainbow" portfolio, 1978

Seven screenprints in colors on wove paper and the separate book by the artist
Edition: 48/120 (there were also 12 artist's proofs)
Each of the screenprints signed, dated, and numbered in pencil in the lower margin: Hughes 79; each also with a pencil inventory / work number, verso; together with the printed title and colophon pages printed on black paper; and the separate brown cloth-covered hardback book, co-created by the artist and Paul Hammond, "Upon the Pun: Dual Meaning in Words and Pictures;" all but the hardback book loose; housed together in the original white paper-covered portfolio-box with the printed title; Coriander Studio, London, England, prntr. and pub.
Sheet of each screenprint: 9" H x 5.5" W (or reverse); Book: 8.75" H x 5.5" W x 0.5" D

  • Notes:
The book's colophon page states that each of these portfolios includes six screenprints in colors, however, this example happens to have seven. This page also indicates that the screenprints are printed on B.F.K. Reeves [sic; likely intended to read as B.F.K. Rives], although no watermarks are visible. The inventory / work numbers on the verso of each of the screenprints are inscribed sequentially in pencil: TM: 81.2.I-C to I-G, and the inside cover of the hardback book is inscribed in pencil: TM: 81.2.I-H.
  • Condition: Overall good appearance. The seven screenprints each with full margins and the colors fresh. A few of the sheets with an extremely minor and unobtrusive handling mark visible only in raking light. The original white paper-covered outer portfolio-box with minor shelf wear, surface soiling, a few minor surface scuffs, skinned patches, and old masking tape.

    Portfolio-Box: 9.25" H x 6" W x 1.25" D

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
