Vertical multi-color abstract, unsigned, acrylic and metallic paint on canvas and board, approximately: 91'' H x 36'' W x 9'' D, est: $6000/9000. Note: Neil Williams was a pioneer of the shaped canvas and continued to innovate in structure and medium throughout his career. Williams was born in Utah and graduated from the California School of Fine Arts in 1959. He was an important member of the New York art movement in the 1960s and taught and exhibited extensively in the city. The present and following work synthesize earlier explorations of surface with stylized landscape and floral elements inspired by the artist's experiences visiting Brazil (E. Leffingwell,''Sao Paulo Diary'', Art in America, January 1989, p. 56). These works, created by piecing together different painted structures, unite tropical patterning with urban hard-edge structure.
