Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904 New York, NY / St. Augustine, FL)

oil on panel
12'' H x 8'' W

  • Provenance: Estate, Arizona; by descent in the family to the present owner
  • Notes: Dr. Theodore E. Stebbins Jr. writes of the present work in his letter of authentication: Heade painted roses on many occasions, but your picture is part of (sic) series of about ten small works that depict one or two red roses in a simple glass tumbler. They are nos. 473-482 in my book (Yale Press 2000). Typically the glass is seen on a shiny wood table, and typically Heade paints the reflections of the glass on the wood surface, as he has done here. I date this series to c. 1878-'83, when he was in New York, just before he moved to Florida. I would guess that your picture is early in the group, judging from the silvery-green leaves and the way the glass isn't quite convincing in its volume. The painter apparently concentrated his efforts on the rose itself, which is rendered with great care and many different tones of red and pink; it glows with color and has a nice sculptural quality (the original letter from Dr. Stebbins dated 27 February 2013 accompanies the lot). The present work will be included in Dr. Theodore E. Stebbins Jr.'s next edition of the catalogue raisonne of the work of Martin Johnson Heade
  • Condition: Visual: Generally good, original condition. Frame abrasion with some rubbing and minor losses along the four edges. Blacklight: No evidence of restoration under blacklight.
