Margaret Bourke-White

(1904-1971)

"Al. Co.," (Factory Worker, Aluminum Company of America), circa 1935

Silver gelatin print on thick paper mounted to paperboard
From an edition of unknown size
Signed in pencil on the paperboard mount lower right: Bourke / White; with the artist's black ink stamp, " A / Margaret Bourke-White / Photograph," verso; inscribed in black ink, "# 1 / Parklawn," pencil notations "M 2" and "5747," and what appears to be possible remnants of a signature in blue ink (now mostly gone due to removal of old tape), all verso; titled by repute
Image/Sheet: 13.5" H x 9.5" W; Mount: 21" H x 14" W

  • Provenance:
    Private collection, Santa Monica, CA
  • Condition: The photograph and its mount are generally good appearance. Photograph: Tipped to the original paperboard mount, likely acidic, in places along the verso of the sheet edges. There are a few dime-sized spots of mild silvering at the edges which may correspond to the tipping just mentioned. A smattering of occasional possible touch-ups (rice-sized or smaller), as well as one similar pea-sized spot, all visible mostly in raking light. Two of these areas appear to be covering small scuffs, one is under the left arm of the figure and the other is along the center of the sheet's right edge. There is an ever-so-slight cockle to the paper. The very outer edges of the corners have slight wear, and there is a pinhead-sized abrasion along the right portion of the lower sheet edge.
Mount: The paperboard mount was embossed, as issued, leaving a window in which to place the photograph. This mount is toned overall, however the embossed area is a bit lighter than the rest of the mount. There is a 1.5" H band of time-staining along the upper edge of the mount and a 2" band of the same sort along the lower edge of the mount. The corners of the mount are slightly dog-eared but appear stable. The verso of the mount has a few scattered rice-sized stains of unknown origin, as well as some minor scattered dirt and scuffs. White linen and paper tape remnants and/or slight surface skinning in places along the upper edge, and upper portion of the vertical edges, verso. None of the mount issues either on the recto or verso affect the photograph. The paperboard mount (together with the tipped photo) is secured to a piece of Foamcore with two hand-made paper corners at the lower corners only.

    Framed under glass: 25.5" H x 21.5" W x 1.25" D
