M. Bateman-Champain

(Late 19th/early 20th century)

"Here They Come" (Hunting dogs scrambling over a fence), circa 1900

Ink and gray wash on off-white paper laid to board, as issued
Signed in the lower right corner: M. Bateman-Champain; titled from a related engraving by another artist; and dated from notations verso
Sheet 25.625" H x 15.625" W; Original mount: 26.125" H x 16.625" W

  • Notes:
The present work appears to be based on the painting "Hounds in Full Cry" by the British artist Thomas Blinks (1860-1912) that served as a model for the engraving "Here They Come," by Joseph Bishop Pratt (1854-1910), published in 1883 by Arthur Tooth & Sons, London.

According to information affixed to the frame's backing paper, notations and a date of 1907 were hand-written "on the back" by a previous matter/framer called The Art Shop in London, England. Those notations are not visible as the work is currently matted.
  • Condition: Overall generally good condition. An unobtrusive, 4" crease extending horizontally from approximately the center of the left sheet edge. A 2.5" H x 0.375" W loss to the upper left corner of the sheet/board, with an attendant minute tear, most of which affects only the sky and a few stray tree branches. Minor paper toning from a previous mat window slightly visible in the upper 1.5" of the sky. As mentioned, the sheet is mounted to matboard, as issued (some of the wash extends onto the edges of the matboard). As a result of this matboard then being mounted to yet another matboard, slight traces of very old adhesives expand approximately 0.125" onto the extreme upper edge of the artwork. The work, with its double matboard mounts, is taped to the overmat with white archival tape in five places from its edges, verso

    Framed under Plexiglas: 36" H x 25" W x 2" D
