  • Provenance: Other notes:
This refined table lamp reflects Lillian Palmer's important role in the California Arts and Crafts movement. The copper base has been sensitively repurposed into a sculptural lighting form while retaining its original patina and elegant proportions. Above, a conical mica shade encases Japanese kimono stencils between translucent panels. When illuminated, it casts a warm amber glow, and the textile motifs appear in soft silhouettes.

The lamp was likely created between Palmer's return from Japan in 1909 and the closing of her San Francisco shop in 1917, the most productive phase of her career. Her travels to Japan informed her understanding of traditional metalwork and design, and she frequently incorporated authentic bronzes and textiles into her studio production.

Working in San Francisco, then a national center for handcrafted metalwork, Palmer directed a studio employing skilled artisans including August Tiesselinck and Darcy Gaw, both later associated with Dirk Van Erp. Their movement between workshops underscores the interconnected and competitive character of the Bay Area metalworking community.

As a woman leading a successful metal studio in a male-dominated field, Palmer's achievements were notable. The years 1909 to 1917 mark the height of her artistic synthesis, combining firsthand Japanese influence, California craftsmanship, and a sophisticated use of light and material.
