Dahlager / March 3, 1929; the second: Jules / 40, signed again on a printed ''Horse Creek Mary'' card affixed verso, each: oil on canvas laid to artist's board, the first: 7'' H x 5'' W; the second: 9'' H x 5'' W, est: $1500/2000. Note: According to the unidentified printed card affixed to the portrait, Horse Creek Mary was ''[b]orn of a native mother and Russian father [and] was one of the colorful characters of early pioneer days in Alaska, With a fierce pride she concealed with her grizzled locks the loss of an eye said to have once been the badge of slavery....Her home was a cabin on Horse Creek, about one hundred and fifty miles from Valdez and in the early days she often mushed this distance to obtain her supplies...She died in Cordova in 1925''.
