(1836-1932)

"Musee Grevin, Theatre les Fantoches de John Hewelt," 1900

Lithograph in colors on cream wove paper laid to linen
From the edition without text
Signed and dated in the stone near the right edge, at center: J. Cheret; Imprimerie Chaix (Ateliers Cheret), Paris, France, prntr.
Image: 46.5" H x 32.5" W; Sheet: 49" H x 35" W

  • Provenance: Pasquale Iannetti, Inc., San Francisco, CA
  • Literature: Broido 471; Cheret 608; DFP-II 267 (var.)
  • Notes: Jules Cheret's Belle-Epoque confections enjoyed wild popularity and brightened the streets of Paris—gaiety previously associated only with parades and festivals. He is sometimes called the father of the modern poster and is credited with teaching Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec the intricacies of color lithography. The Musee Grevin, a wax museum opened in 1882, used this very popular design to advertise puppet shows and other spectacles. This example is without text, but bold lettering would be added for each event.

  • Condition: Overall good condition. With margins and the colors good. The printer's information line lacking along the lower portion of the left margin edge. Pale light staining. Two small foxmarks as well as two horizontal flattened creases in the upper half of the image, the longest measuring 4," visible primarily in raking light and most likely inherent in the printing. Slight time staining along the vertical margin edges. Taped to the back mat with white hinging tape in the four corners of the linen support

    Framed under Plexiglas: 60" H x 45" W x 1.5" D
