  • Provenance: Other notes:
Joseph Henry Sharp first visited Spain in 1885/1886 after a return to Europe to continue his studies. Initially he enrolled at the Academy in Munich studying under Karl Von Marr before travelling through Spain and Italy with fellow artist Frank Duveneck.

Sharp returned to Spain in 1922, this time joined by his wife Louise Sharp on an extended European trip through France and into Spain. In Madrid, "the artist wanted to reacquaint himself with the rich collections of the Prado Museum...where he had been so inspired in his younger years, 1895" (https://centerofthewest.org/catalogs/sharp).

The couple also visited the historic cities of Toledo and Granada where the artist photographed and sketched on the grounds of the palace and fortress of the Alhambra. Aside from the present work, three other sketches attributed to the Alhambra location are known to have been executed by Sharp on this trip, all in the collection of the Great Plains Art Museum, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE.

In the present work, Sharp captures a quiet courtyard likely on the palace grounds, featuring three Moorish arches, one horseshoe and two-pointed horseshoe forms, along with decorative columns and a fountain. The Moorish rammed earth and brick walls are bathed in the reddish-pink sunset hues adding to the sereneness of the scene.
  • Condition: Visual: Overall good appearance. Slight grime and varnish discoloration commensurate with age. A 0.5" repaired vertical edge tear extending in from the center of the lower edge, not visible as framed. Minor frame abrasion slightly affecting the signature. Artist pinholes scattered along the edges, and slight wear at the tips of the canvas/board corners. As mentioned, the canvas is laid to board.

Blacklight: A pea-sized touch-up at the repaired edge tear in the center of the lower edge mentioned above.

    Frame: 13" H x 16.75" W x 2" D
