  • Notes: The present work is accompanied by an original sepia-toned image of the watercolor, signed and inscribed verso by Emily Sargent, sister of the artist who states: This watercolor drawing is by my brother, John S. Sargent, & was in his studio at the time of his death. / It was painted in the Tyrol, not far from Botzen, in 1914 / July 16th. 1927 Also accompanying this lot are the original sales receipt and the original shipping invoice dated 19 July 1927 and 6 September 1927 respectively, and a typed letter from David Croal Thomson of Barbizon House, dated 19 July 1927. Mr. Thomson writes: ''I write to confirm the sale to you of the Watercolour drawing by J.S. Sargent, R.A. ''In the Tyrol'', No. 29 in our Exhibition of Sargent's Drawings. This watercolour comes to me from Miss Emily Sargent, the sister of the artist and she has signed a photograph of the drawing stating that it was in Sargent's studio at the time of his death. Miss Sargent informs me that the drawing was painted in 1914 and she looks on it as one of the strongest pieces of colour that her brother has produced. The picture will be sent to our agents in Philadelphia who will write to you asking instructions as to delivery.'' An essay about the painting written by scholar Alice Munro-Faure accompanies the lot. We are grateful to Ms. Munro-Faure for her assistance in cataloging this lot. The John Singer Sargent catalogue raisonne committee has reviewed and accepted this watercolor as a genuine work by the artist
