John Opie

(1761-1807)

"Mrs. Brookings"

Oil on canvas laid to canvas
Unsigned; titled on the frame plaque
30" H x 25" W

  • Condition: Visual: Overall generally good appearance. Soft stretcher bar creases on each side, primarily visible in raking light. Very fine crazing, primarily scattered in the face of the figure. A 0.5" H x 0.5" W L-shaped old tear that has been repaired, in the right portion of the figure's lower torso. An unobtrusive pinhead-sized area of craquelure possibly due to an abrasion, at the edge of the figure's right shoulder. Frame abrasion primarily in the left, right, and lower edges, with attendant scattered pinhead-sized or smaller pigment losses. The tacking edges have been removed, and as mentioned, the canvas has been relined.

Blacklight: A 0.5" H x 0.5" W L-shaped touch-up attendant with the old repaired tear mentioned above, in the right portion of the figure's lower torso. A few scattered 2" H x 1" W (or smaller) areas of older and newer touch-up, confined primarily to the background and outer edges. A heavy layer of varnish has been applied.

    Frame: 35.5" H x 30.5" W x 2.5" D

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
