Joe Duncan Gleason (1881-1959 Glendale, CA)

oil on canvas
30.25'' H x 36'' W

  • Provenance: Provenance: Private Collection, Indiana
  • Notes: Note: In ''The Last Port'' Gleason captures three vessels as they lay retired in Seattle. Each of the schooners and the bark had long histories in the lumber and Alaskan fishing industries. Gordon Newell writes in 'Maritime events of 1937': ''Two well known Pacific Coast sailing vessels and a unit of the coastwise wooden steam schooner fleet were burned together in March at Picnic Point, Puget Sound, by Seattle ship breakers, all three having been last engaged in the Alaska cannery trade and in layup for several years. The sailing vessels were the old Downeast bark W.B. Flint, Bath - built in 1885, and the four-masted schooner Henry Wilson built at Aberdeen in 1899. The Wilson had completed her last voyage from Alaska in 1922, the Flint in 1923. (G. Newell, ''Maritime events of 1937'', H.W. McCurdy Marine History of the Pacific Northwest, p. 458). When Libby Company bought out Alaska Salmon Co. of San Francisco in 1917, they owned four sailing ships including the W.B. Flint. Soon after Libby had the W.F. Burrows, a four-masted schooner with twin diesel engines, built in Portland by the G.M. Standifer Construction Company. The W.F. Burrows was scrapped in 1934
