  • Provenance:
    The Schultheis Estate, WA
  • Notes:
According to the artist, "The image in this painting represents a Lakota Scout and is based on a point in history: August 20, 1854, the day Chief Conquering Bear was murdered by the United States Army in a peaceful village along the Holy Road.
After the Chief was gravely wounded, a scout was sent to Fort Laramie to determine the strength of the army in the area. The people needed to know if you should flee or could stay and try to doctor the Chief. The report the scout brought back was that "There are many, but no more than so many." The people did flee and the Chief died.
More than the tragedy of the loss of a great and peaceful man, this event galvanized the thinking of a teenage boy and set his hatred for the army and their treatment of his people. This young man at that time was known as Curly, later to be called Crazy Horse, the Great War Leader of the Lakota People."
  • Condition: Overall generally good appearance. Dust accumulation and scattered grime residue adhered to the surface. Minor edge wear scattered in places along the extreme left and lower edges. An uneven varnish or protective layer has been applied.

    Unframed
