  • Provenance:

  • Notes:
"The Cheyenne Prophet, Sweet Medicine, brought to The People all of their ceremonies, their forms of government and their warrior societies. The most legendary of these societies was the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers.
The Dog Soldiers were the rear guard that protected The People from danger during retreats from the enemy. The soldiers were sworn by their secret rituals to make sure that during war, all of The People and their possessions were safe, before the dos rejoined the main body of the tribe.
The Dog soldiers wore large feathered headdresses as one of the symbols of their society. During the time of battle they attached eight foot long, red sashes to their backs. At the other end of the sash, they would use a lance to stake themselves to the ground. Within this eight foot radius, they would fight to the death.
In this painting I depict four Dog Soldiers, each an individual, yet each tied to one another in their commitment to The People."
  • Condition: Overall good appearance. A few small areas of residue adhered to the surface.
