Jean Mannheim (1863-1945 Pasadena, CA)

oil on canvas
24'' H x 20'' W

  • Provenance: Nellie Durfee; W.G. Durfee, gifted from the above, Jan. 1, 1914 (see stretcher inscription)
  • Notes: The present work relates closely to Mannheim's work 'Little Chrysanthmums (Jeanne and the Flowers)' that graces the cover of Richard W. Reitzell's book ''From a Versatile Brush: the Life and Art of Jean Mannheim''. About that painting a critic at the 'Decateur Daily Review' wrote on February 28, 1911, ''A great bunch of the rich reds, shading into browns, flowers, not painted and petaled out in great detail, but broadly, richly, yet shadowy at one side and around the bottom, while the wise little golden head of his daughter, Jeanne, leans out toward them looking like one of Sir Joshua Reynolds' famed angel heads, only with a new, more glorious...natural setting.'' (as quoted in R. Reitzell, ''From a Versatile Brush: the Life and Art of Jean Mannheim'', Moorpark, CA, 2011, p. 143). In the present painting, Mannheim paints a riot of chrysanthemum blossoms immediately surrounding young Jeanne's beautific face. The provenance inscription on the stretcher connects this work to the Durfee family who must have been friends or clients of Jean Mannheim. A portrait of Minnie Durfee, possibly the daughter of Nellie Durfee, is illustrated on page 130 of Reitzell's book. During the 1914 Mannheim exhibition at Throop College, four exhibited paintings by Mannheim were lent by 'N. Durfee'. We are grateful for Rich Reitzell's assistance in cataloging this lot
